Norway spruce production and static stability in IUFRO thinning experiments in the Czech Republic

Despite recent issues, Norway spruce remains the most important commercial tree species which might be demanded henceforth for its broadly utilizable wood. Even before foresters faced both bark beetle outbreaks and decline, monospecific stands were known to prone also other damage due snow wind. On this basis, measures that help prevent such failures looked for, resulted in establishment of international IUFRO experimental series focused on impacts different thinning regimes stability production stands. The treatments differed numbers trees removed retained site when dominant height crop was reached or allowable cut non-crop accumulated. Also effects width skid trails tested. study summarizes results from two experiments Czech Republic. Effects found positive though reduced total volume wood while improving crop-tree enhanced safety.
